ELGEYO MARAKWET COUNTY AMONG SEVERAL COUNTIES TO CONDUCT AUDIT OF CIVIL SERVANTS AND FORMER COUNCIL WORKERS BEFORE BEING ABSORBED:- Counties in the North Rift are carrying out a headcount of all public servants. Public Service Boards in Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties have started auditing staff as they prepare to take over running of devolved services. The exercise is also aimed at weeding out ghost workers in some of the counties. The assessment and audit of staff will help to establish the number of employees they will require in the county departments. Elgeyo Marakwet PSB chairman Gideon Kipyakwai yesterday said they want to ensure no ghost workers in the region. His Uasin Gishu counterpart Joseph Tanui said interests of all workers will be safeguarded. “We will involve all staff and no one will be victimised. We want transparency so that we can work together to develop this region,” he said. More than 900 workers at the former civic bodies in Uasin Gishu will also be assessed to gauge their experience and qualifications in readiness for redeployment by the county government. Uasin Gishu PSB vice chairman Joyce Kibenei said the headcount will also assess how workers can be made more productive in the new system. Kibenei said it will help the county government know job vacancies available in various departments and plan how to hire new staff under the strategic plan. “It will help us rationalise the manpower so staff can be deployed to areas where they can perform better," she said. There are fears that most of the counties in the region have a high number of ghost workers causing high expenditure on salaries and benefits. Kibenei said the headcount is expected to be completed in two weeks. Workers are required to produce all documents indicating how they were employed and where they have been working.
