ELHS Head Football Coach Bill Feraco provides this update here on July 8th concerning the current status of the Trojan football team heading into the fast approaching 2013 season: Hello fellow Football Trojans! When speaking with Rufus and Tom as they were creating the idea, the planning, and the organization of the EL football association, it was suggested and agreed upon that I might channel program updates when timely and appropriate. For the past three years, we have had a team meeting at the end of May (29th), and the kids have declared a position on which they would like to stand on short-term, intentional goals and a theme that would be solely specific to their season/2013 … the mantra on which the season would be built is “Compete with Dedication and Confidence or 2013 C/D+C”. A lot of discussion and blending of other characteristics went into this grassroots decision. We have broken the summer into three separate stages of preparation leading to the demands that two-a-day practices will bring with them on August 12th. After completing the first phase (three weeks) of the summer program, attendance, quality participation, and work ethic have been very good … we go Monday thru Thursday from 740-930 AM and have been averaging 32-36 kids (out of a projected roster of 44-48) a morning. We always strive to get all involved, and these numbers are solid relative to the other things which the kids have happening: vacations, travel, camps, summer basketball (ended in June) and baseball. From June 28th thru July 7th the State has mandated a “no contact” period … each position left with the clear understanding of particular skills/techniques to polish and that “no contact did not mean no work.” The next two phases – July 8th to August 1st and August 5th to 9th – are structured to build positive momentum for the start of practice and eventually a riveted focus on game #1, Haslett. Coming out of our first two passing scrimmages, we have pinpointed cleaning issues we have at receiver and two of the four LB positions and closely watching the spirited competition at QB from two athletic but inexperienced candidates … we have five of these scrimmages left. In closing, I want to say that it is a humbling honor to be a small part of this great program. And, you are always welcome and encouraged to attend a summer workout, practice, etc. and maybe speak to the kids … you will leave admiring their willingness to achieve the things that are asked of them. They are well aware that “The Eye Of Tradition Is Watching!” Thank you well in advance for your ongoing support … Bill Feraco.
