ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMAN Last Friday three lovely ladies came to visit the embassy to pin a white ribbon on Ambassador Piët and Deputy Head of Mission Lianne Houben to commemorate White Ribbon day. The pinning of the white ribbon is part of an Island wide campaign in order to create awareness for the Elimination of violence against women, organized by The Legal Aid Commission of Sri Lanka. END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a white ribbon as its iconic symbol. To raise awareness and to trigger action to end the global scourge of violence against women and girls, the UN observes International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence which follow (ending on 10 December, Human Rights Day) are a chance to mobilize and raise awareness. This year, the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign invites you to “Orange YOUR Neighbourhood,” with the colour designated by the UNiTE campaign to symbolize a brighter future without violence.
