ELKINS - On the heels of his American Music Awards nomination for New Artist of the Year, American Idol sensation Phillip Phillips is set to make his long-awaited stop at Davis & Elkins College. The popular shows season 11 winner will play at 8 p.m. Friday at the Harper-McNeeley Auditorium. A limited number of tickets still are available, and only can be purchased online - dne.musictoday - or by telephone at 800-594-TIXX. Tickets are $15 for D&E students, $25 for general admission and $35 for prime seats. This is going to be a sellout, said Sid Gillespie, executive director of the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA. Its going to be a fantastic show. ‘American Idol’ sensation Phillip Phillips will perform at D&E College on Friday. We are very fortunate to bring an act like this to the area, Gillespie added. It has been great working with Scott (Goddard), Michael (Mihalyo) and all the D&E staff. We booked this months ago, but had to cancel that show because of his kidney surgery. The first show was scheduled earlier in the week, but this time, he was able to give us a Friday. Now, he is an artist of the year nominee and always is on the top of the Pandora playlists. He is a very big act, and its great that he is coming to Elkins. Phillips rose to stardom following his American Idol win and the debut of his coronation song, Home. His first album, The World from the Side of the Moon, was released Nov. 19, 2012, and debuted No. 4 on the Billboard 200. The album was certified platinum in August. The rock artist is preparing to record his second album, and first with 19 entertainment/Interscope Records. Its going to have more of a rock sound, Phillips said. The most important thing to me is making music that comes from my heart and really connects with people on a gut level. Opening the night of entertainment will be Serena Ryder, a Canadian-born star known for her raspy tones. Ryders popular ballad, Weak in the Knees, is widely popular, going gold in 2006. Another of her singles, Stompa, went triple-platinum in 2012. Ryders performance is set to start at 7 p.m. Fridays concerts are sponsored by Davis & Elkins College, Allegheny Insurance and Yuengling. All proceeds will benefit the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA. - Contact Matthew Burdette at 304-636-2121, ext. 120 or via email at mburdette@theintermountain. Follow him on Twitter at IMT_Burdette.
