ELON, KEEP YOUR MITTS OFF CALIFORNIA’S CEQA Elon Musk is the CEO of Tesla, an all-electric car company that really is a worthwhile environmental idea. That’s good. He builds the cars in Fremont, California and employs a lot of people. That’s good. He wants to build factories that produce batteries for the cars and may build some of them in California which could produce more jobs. That’s good. He’s negotiating with the governor and the legislature for a massive tax break ($500 million), which would be 10% of the overall cost of the battery plant. This doesn’t thrill me, but there may be things worth considering in that are arena. He wants to rape CEQA, the California environmental statute which was one of the most important pieces of legislation passed during the Reagan administration. That’s bad! Furthermore, it’s rumored (according to the Los Angeles Times) that Tesla may be allowed to start construction and mitigate any potential damage later. That’s horrible and it pisses me off. I love those environmental laws. Not only that, but we’re apparently fifth in line among the states Mr. Musk is considering for his factory anyway and he needed an answer yesterday. Really! In short, fornicate CEQA; who needs that pile of crap? Answer: California. It’s difficult to pick up a paper and not read that California is a rotten state to do business in because taxes are too high and environmental restrictions are too tough. If that’s true, why do people continue to start businesses in California? If we destroy CEQA, (and this factory could be the camel’s head in the tent as every Tom, Dick or Elon demands that we weaken our environmental laws) kiss the environment goodbye. In 20 years California will look like a house that needs paint with a tire-less car jacked up in the middle of its weedy lawn. You prefer other states to California for your factory, Elon, go for it.
