ELYSIUM (2013) lived down to every review Id read. On a five star rating scale, filmmaker Neill Blomkamps follow-up to his four-star DISTRICT 9 (2009) is a two star movie if there ever was one. Photo-realistic visual effects transported me from the Third World slums of Los Angeles -- looking like present day Ciudad Juarez -- to an interstellar Eden modeled on the vertigo inducing space station of Arthur C. Clarkes RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA. But the movie is ruled by a summer action movie plot that never stops for a breath and is largely ridiculous. Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley are wasted; their characters are on comic book villain time. Without Blomkamps visual aesthetic, the movie would be a TOTAL RECALL rip-off, faint praise. Everyone involved needed a more ambitious and original script. I skipped through the last 20 minutes.
