EMAIL FROM MEMBER RE: CHILD IS FRIGHTENED OF HER TEACHER: Hi there, I cant tell you how much I would appreciate some advice. My daughter is six years old, and in year two at school. More or less from the word go she really hasnt enjoyed this new school year, as I believe she is genuinely frightened of her teacher. In past years, she has been fine, going into school most days with a smile on her face, ready to learn. But this year, she has clung onto me in the playground each morning, either in tears or getting herself into a bit of a state, which is so unlike her. Each morning before we set out, she complains of tummy ache, and seems generally not herself at all. What has really gotten to me though, is the things that she has been saying that her teacher has said to her several times, such as stupid girl and youre really not ready to learn. My daughter has also mentioned that her teacher roughly pushed her hand away to rub out all her work, as she had done it the wrong way. My daughter is quiet and shy, wouldnt say boo to a goose, and I know that her behaviour at school is excellent. But she is being made to feel that she is stupid, and her confidence is slowly, but very surely disappearing before my eyes. When she does her homework, she knows what has been asked of her and completes it well, yet her teacher has said to me on numerous occasions that she is struggling with numbers, reading, and failing to answer any questions she is asked. I firmly believe it is because she is scared. What should I do? This teacher has an air of superiority about her, and she makes even me a little nervous around her. My little girl is deeply unhappy, and I dont know what to do for the best. Theres a parents evening coming up next week, so Id really appreciate your advice as to what I can say to this teacher, without possibly making things worse for her. Many thanks in advance x
