EMAIL RE: CHILD IS GAGGING ON LUMPY FOODS: I have a one year old son who still gags if I give him anything to eat that is not completely smoothly pureed. I have asked health visitors for help, but all they tell me is to try certain foods like peeled grapes, very softly cooked carrot stick, rusks, bananas that sort of thing. I have tried all of these, but as soon as a lump reaches his tongue (doesnt even need to get to his throat, so I dont think its a swallowing issue), he will gag until he throws up. I have also tried fruit purees with bits, he tries to chew on it (so I also dont believe that hes just lazy), but again he gags until throwing up. He takes food from my plate and tries to chew on that too, so he wants to eat more interesting food than just purees, but it always ends in throwing up. Has anyone else had this problem, and should I be worried, or take him to a throat specialist?
