EMERALD You cross the moor as the tide recedes Your children following behind Your staff in hand worn of age grasping it so tightly You wander through the reeds Hard is the sun upon your back Green as emerald This mother earth Her presence shines through so brightly even though you pace her landscape like a tiger in a cage You spend your days foraging for anything you can find your children thin their feet calloused their smiles tarnished the only thing on their cynical minds who will provide when we are hungry where do we sleep when darkness breeds a sinister element when the rain comes in there is no shelter love is not a lost emotion but a closely guarded sentiment Your fear it falls like your tears clouding your vision you cannot see hope from here show me a place on earth where someone has not been in anguish wear your heart for all to see there is nothing you ever need to fear this world belongs to you it’s not something that’ll ever be easy not in this lifetime maybe in the next if your soul is pure if you walk with shadows only following the sun on your face your heart falling with the sun as it sets a soul that wants to live without hurt your only crime You build a fire under the trestles a refuge from the wind where it’s bitter fingers cannot reach your children huddled around the flame survival is something born from within the hunger in your belly something no one needs to ever teach you call upon a prayer you learned as child broken into verses you can only recall in the darkness of night the wind outside this makeshift shelter blowing wild you bring your babies in close to your side the prayer the only prayer you know they fall to sleep as you recite You cross the moor in the morning mist resting only briefly to warm your tired feet laying down your sorrow your feet sore as you bury them down deep into the peat closing your eyes never allowing yourself the luxury of dreams there is a night that comes in so cold to keep moving is all you know to do for the wind has no mercy the night unforgiving the warmth you feel will not stay in your heart for long red as ruby your blood the heart that delivers it to your veins no longer innocent it has turned a deep sapphire blue © Words written by Glenn Bowie 2010
