EMMANUEL SANDERS’ AGENT UNDER FIRE FOR NEGOTIATION - TopicsExpress

EMMANUEL SANDERS’ AGENT UNDER FIRE FOR NEGOTIATION TACTICS Steve Weinberg, the agent for wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders has a few NFL teams upset about how he handled his client’s courtship during the first week of free agency. Some are accusing Weinberg of pulling a couple of shady moves. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the big accusation is that Weinberg accepted a deal in principle with the Kansas City Chiefs before negotiating with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, using the Chiefs deal as leverage before finally agreeing to a contract with the Broncos. He also blew off a meeting with the San Francisco 49ers in the process. According to several reports, the Broncos had no idea Weinberg had verbally agreed to another deal with Chiefs. This was one of the worst situations in modern football negotiations, one executive involved told Rapoport. Totally wrong. This needs to be stopped. Weinberg was recently reinstated by the NFL Players Association. He was barred and decertified in 2003 because he reportedly diverted assets to an offshore account illegally during a dispute with a former partner of his. Weinberg in turn sued the NFLPA, claiming it illegally stripped him of certification for eight years, also seeking lost income. Weinberg went from more than 40 clients when he was decertified to three who are currently in the NFL. Sanders denies any wrongdoing by his agent. He stated that he never agreed in principle to a contract with the Chiefs before reaching a deal with Denver, USA Today reports. There was no handshake, there was no agreement, Sanders said after being introduced by the Broncos. Sanders said playing with Peyton Manning is wide receiver heaven and that Denver was his top choice in free agency all along. Technically what Weinberg did in negotiating the contract between the Broncos and Sanders was not illegal by NFL rules, as they had not signed a deal yet. But he did break several unwritten rules, and team officials are crying foul. When a man gives you his words and pulls out, one executive told NFL, then gives another team your word and pulls out, then gives another team his word ... Not proper. (Photo: denverbroncos)
