EMPOWER PARTNERSHIPS FOR INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM 19 July, 2013 Feminist Dalit Organization and Nepal Disabled Women Association Partners with U.S. Department of State to Bolster Disability Rights in United States July, 2013—Feminist Dalit Organization and Nepal Disabled Women Association have been selected to participate in the U.S. Department of State sponsored Professional Fellows EMPOWER Program, administered by Mobility International USA (MIUSA). This two-way international exchange program aims to expand the capacity of organizations in the U.S. and abroad to promote inclusive communities and advance the rights of persons with disabilities around the world. Feminist Dalit Organization and Nepal Disabled Women Association have partnered with Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund in the United States to implement a long-term project on Advocacy, Leadership, and grassroots organizing for the rights of women with disabilities, including Dalit women with disabilities. In November 2013, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund will send Susan Henderson, Executive Director, to Nepal for a preliminary exchange visit to gain an understanding of disability issues and inclusion in Nepal communities, as well as to lay the foundation for an effective ongoing international relationship. One representative each from Feminist Dalit Organization and Nepal Disabled Women Association will then be hosted by MIUSA, Oct. 13–19, 2013, and by Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund, Oct. 19 - 29, 2013, where they will work alongside American counterparts to gain first-hand experience on how issues in their field are addressed in the United States. Part of this exchange will include several meetings with the US partner staff to discuss project review and enhancements, site/cultural visits of the community, explore creative strategies for the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life. Feminist Dalit Organization and Nepal Disabled Women Association are two of 40 international organizations and institutions from 20 different countries that have been competitively selected to participate in the Professional Fellows EMPOWER Program. Collectively, projects range from inclusive education, independent living, healthcare and reproductive rights, law and policy, legal aid, recreation and sports, access to public services and advocacy for all persons with disabilities. At the conclusion of the U.S. program all overseas participants and their U.S. hosts will gather in Washington, D.C., for a three day closing conference facilitated by MIUSA, Oct. 29- Nov.2. Participants will have the opportunity to network with other leaders in their field, and share plans for long-term programming that will be implemented upon their return home.
