EMU History Established in 1979, Eastern Mediterranean University offers programs fully recognized by Council of Higher Education in Turkey. Having completed its physical infrastructure, the campus spreads over an area of 2200 acres. The University owns unprecedented campus facilities, and creates a multicultural environment with students coming from 68 countries and highly qualified faculty members from 35 different nations. There is a perfect harmony and dialog between the students and the faculty. Thanks to the modern understanding of education shared by all, students are trained as individuals thoroughly learned and endowed with excellent research skills, who can generate new knowledge, who are aware of and meticulous about environmental issues, who are creative, confident and ready to compete with the world youth. In addition to the in-door and out-door sport complexes, the variant of student clubs and the fully-equipped offices they own where all club activities are planned, and the on-campus dormitory facilities reflect the student oriented educational philosophy of Eastern Mediterranean University. Timeline 1979 - The Institute of Higher Technology constituting the foundation of Eastern Mediterranean University is established by the Ministry of Education. 1979 - The Institute of Higher Technology starts providing education with the Departments of Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering offering 3-year programs to 105 students with the aim of educating an intermediate workforce between an engineer and a technician and issuing a ‘technician-engineer’ diploma to successful students. 1984 - Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Departments are extended to four-year programs. 1985 - Governments of Turkish Republic (TR) and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) mutually agree on opening a university called ‘Eastern Mediterranean University’. Members of the T.R. Council of Higher Education visit the Institute of Higher Technology with the aim of transforming it into a university. 1986 - Following the TRNC Assembly’s approval of the Statute establishing the North Cyprus Education Foundation and Eastern Mediterranean University (18/86), the Institute of Higher Technology is converted into a state University assuming the name of Eastern Mediterranean University. 1986 - Faculties of Engineering, Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics and School of Computing and Technology are inaugurated. 1990 - Faculty of Architecture and School of Tourism and Hospitality Management are established. 1995 - The Eastern Mediterranean College is established. 1996 - Faculty of Law starts offering education. 1997 - Faculty of Communication is inaugurated. Eastern Mediterranean Nursery School and Elementary School are established. 1999 - Faculty of Education is established. 2004 - Eastern Mediterranean University celebrates its 25th Silver Year with a modern infrastructure established on 2.200 acres of land and over 17.600 graduates from different countries. 2005 - Eastern Mediterranean University obtains full membership of European University Association (EUA) and International University Association (IUA). 2007 - School of Applied Disciplines starts offering education. 2010 - Faculty of Health Sciences and School of Justice are inaugurated. 2011 -Faculty of Pharmacy is established. 2012 - Faculty of Medicine starts offering education. 2012 - School of Health Services starts offering education. Eastern Mediterranean University took its well-deserved place within the best 1500 universities in 2011 Webometrics Rankings of World Universities. EMU, which was previously placed as the 1704th university in Webometrics Rankings, has made a considerable progress as it has been ranked as the 1421th university based on the Webometrics evaluations which included 20,000 universities and took 16 universal criterion as their basis. According to rankings by Webometrics, which is centered in Spain, among 160 universities in Turkey, Eastern Mediterranean University has been ranked as the 18th university among the ones with Faculty of Medicine, the 8th among those without Faculty of Medicine and the 4th among private universities (foundation universities) in Turkey. Based on 2011 rankings, EMU continues to carry the title of the top ranking university in Northern Cyprus as other TRNC universities have been ranked as the 3793th and 9088th by Webometrics. It is also worth mentioning that one of the leading institutions of higher education, Middle East Technical University, ranked Eastern Mediterranean University as the 1695th university in METU University Rankings by Academic Performance (URAP), which also included a considerable number of state and foundation universities both in Turkey and throughout the world. Eastern Mediterranean University is proud to have produced more than 32.000 graduates from different cultures and countries.
