British Gas has cut annual gas bills for nearly 7million households by 5 per cent following plunging wholesale costs, bills will fall by an average of £37. The remaining four of the Big Six suppliers are likely to follow with price cuts of their own within days. The Treasury announced earlier this month that it was investigating why household energy prices had not fallen despite lower wholesale costs, while Matt Hancock, the energy minister, wrote to the Big Six to summon them in for meetings to explain their prices. However, the energy companies will face questions over why they did not cut prices soon. Wholesale gas prices are about 27 per cent lower than a year ago after mild winter weather subdued demand.
