END OF AN ERA You may remember a few months back, I posted a story about a property in the Waikato which was over-run with poultry. Hundreds actually, bordering the motorway dicing with death everyday as they pottered around happily. The elderly owner (a local icon), had let her love of birds get away on her, not to mention her home which was uninhabitable, and the council had stepped in with a firm hand - the birds had to go. Well Ive slowly been chipping away at the huge flock, catching 8-10 hens at a time rehoming them as I go. But last weekend the elderly lady passed away and I found out that tomorrow, (Monday 24th), the birds are all being killed. Yesterday I took two lovely friends to the home and we tried our luck using all sorts of tactics to catch the beautiful little bantam mixes. After a few hours we left with 21 (5 roosters, 4 day old chicks and 12 hens.) Later today Im meeting my rescue partner Shawn from The Animal Sanctuary with her secret weapon - Big Bertha! A specialized catch pen for trapping large numbers of clever birds. Any that evade our efforts will be shot or poisoned by the council tomorrow. (Just doing their job, I mean how on earth will the property sell otherwise?) If you can offer a home to some hens and ESPECIALLY a rooster please let me know urgently. Pet homes obviously, not for eating. If the owner is looking down, she will be so grateful to anyone who opens their homes and their hearts for some of her loved birds. May she rest in peace.
