END OF TERM REPORT SHOWS RECORD PERFORMANCE IN SCOTLAND’S SCHOOLS As the summer holidays approach for school children across the country, new figures have shown that Scotland’s schools are achieving record levels of performance. The proportion of school leavers who left school during or at the end of the 2010/11 academic year who had stayed in positive destinations by March 2013 reached 89.5%, the highest percentage on record. This figure compares to a rate of 87.2% last year and means that more young people have stayed in education, training or employment after leaving school than ever before. Meanwhile the proportion of school leavers achieving one or more qualifications at Higher or Advanced Higher rose from 52.5% in 2010/11 to 55.8% in 2011/12, while the proportion of school leavers with no qualifications fell from 2.1% in 2010/11 to 1.7% in 2011/12. Commenting, SNP MSP Clare Adamson who sits on the Education and Culture Committee said: “These record breaking figures are hugely encouraging and are a positive sign that the Scottish Government’s focus on tackling youth unemployment is paying off. “More school leavers than ever before have remained in education, training or employment, helping Scotland to achieve one of the lowest rates of youth unemployment in Europe. “Meanwhile the proportion of school leavers with good qualifications are on the up while the rate of those leaving school with no qualifications is falling. “That can only be down to the fantastic efforts of teachers across Scotland who deserve an enormous amount of credit for the achievements of their pupils. “They should take enormous pride in the record breaking achievements of Scotland’s schools and I know that they will be aiming to keep up this high level of performance in the years ahead.” Notes: Further details can be viewed at scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2013/06/7503
