ENDING SATURDAY: Every now and then we here at Small Traditions receive a card of Derek Jeter we’ve never seen in person before. Such is the case with this 1998 Select Five-Star Bonus card of the Yankee Captain. In the summer of 1998, Pinnacle Brands, Inc., one of the hobby’s innovative (yet overextended) firms, declared bankruptcy, right before they were due to release their 1998 Select baseball and some other products. In later years, copies of cards from some of the unreleased sets began showing up on the secondary market, leading to speculation that former employees took them with them before the company shut down. These “backdoor” issues have been eagerly sought by player collectors ever since. This Five-Star Bonus Jeter is serial numbered 49/50 made, but we can guarantee you that 50 of these cards never made their way out to the market, as weve never, ever seen another. Graded a strong BGS 9 Mint, this card is exquisite in terms of its refractive colors and sharp design. How many Jeter collectors have this one in their collection? Probably not more than a handful, we are sure. Here’s your chance to be one of the precious few!
