ENDING SATURDAY: Skeptics of Derek Sanderson Jeters place in the history of baseball often overlook The Kalamazoo Kids pre-professional baseball accomplishments. In his sophomore year at Kalamazoo Central High, he batted .557, followed by .508 his junior year and then .508 again as a senior, striking out only once. Already a star, he received All-State honorable mention and a heap of impressive national awards, including the 1992 High School Player of the Year Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association, the 1992 Gatorade High School Player of the Year award, and USA Todays High School Player of the Year, among others. A Yankee fan by right of birth, and with Dave Winfield as his childhood idol and with an admirable work ethic instilled by his parents and high school teachers and coaches, he was well on his way to eventually becoming the 11th New York Yankee Captain and one of the most prolific batters in the history of baseball. More than a few of Jeters best cards from his rookie period of 1992 to 1996 have flirted with and even surpassed $10,000, and if any of those have the potential to one day reach five figures again--as they no doubt eventually will--the 1992 Little Sun Autograph is among the first that come to mind. Offered here is what appears to be a perfect example of that iconic card, graded PSA 10 Gem Mint. With a print run of only 250 copies made, the 1992 Little Sun Autograph is widely regarded as Dereks best card from his draft year of 1992 and one of his top autograph issues to own. For years, the card had remained a Pop 3 in the Gem Mint 10 grade at PSA, with early sales ranging from $3,000 to as high as $15,000. With so much of Jeters very best material starting to surface during his final season, however, the card is now a Pop 11, with multiple recent sales here on Small Traditions and also on eBay ranging from $3,500 to $5,500, and more. Very strongly recommended, this colorful hobby icon is one of The Captains single best cards, and it is also one of his best values, especially when compared to his SP Foil and to some of his better known autograph issues and super-short-printed inserts produced between his draft year of 1992 and his ROY Season of 1996. PLEASE NOTE: We are offering two PSA 10 Gem Mint examples of this card in separate lots this month. It is one of Dereks best yet still most undervalued cards, so why not have your pick? Heck, why not pick both? Please also note that these are not the same two copies that we sold last month in our Summer Premium Auction.
