ENDLESS PATROL By PHILLIP SAM OYLER US ARMY VIETNAM In long wet shadows, like specters they float, When the morning sun begins to rise. Ghostly men in Boonie Hats and Tiger Stripes With paint around his eyes Like vapor they EBB, not trembling the leaves Nor making a single perceptible sound Drifting silently, as a green mirage they flow, Through dangerous, and trechorous ground With each man in trail, they journey along Where hardly a trail even dares to exist They move then pause and move again To be swallowed by the mountain mist Where do they come from and where are they going In the murkey depths of my of my troubled mind Are they seeking answers to why so many died Searching for reasons they never shall find Scouting quietly the broken perimeter Bent on breaching the gap and rift They recognize the perilous staits Through which they persistently drift But they will never retreat or surrender The will continue there endless patrol Forever occupying my bleeding heart Forever guarding my shattered soul.
