ENERGIZE YOUR STRENGTH TRAINING ROUTINE Some of us live to eat, but we all eat to live. Food fuels our bodies and provides energy for us to make it through the day and a workout. To get the most out of an exercise session, you need the right fuel and the right amount. Eat too much and you might feel tired and “weighed down.” Eat too little and you might not have enough energy to reach your full gym potential. Eating the right pre-workout foods can help build muscle and improve strength. When it comes to strength training, you might think you need protein alone to help build muscles. While protein is important, you also need carbohydrates, according to this Ace Fitness article. Protein is important because it breaks down into amino acids, which aid in muscle recovery, growth and fat burning. Carbs are important because they help increase your blood glucose level, which gives you energy. Eating both carbs and protein before your workout will provide more energy and less muscle breakdown. The recommended amount of carbohydrates and protein to consume before you strength train is 30 to 45 grams of both 60 to 90 minutes before your workout. When you are short on time, the following is recommended: 20 to 30 grams each of carbs and protein 30 to 60 minutes before, and 10 to 20 grams each 15 to 30 minutes before a workout. Foods high in protein include chicken breast, turkey breast, egg, whey, cottage cheese and cold water fatty fish. Foods that provide a good level of carbohydrates include sweet potatoes, oatmeal, berries, quinoa, banana, brown rice and sprouted grain bread.
