ENGAGE FOR CHANGE Organisations have a tenancy of making changes - TopicsExpress

ENGAGE FOR CHANGE Organisations have a tenancy of making changes after the management and board approve it. Organisations rarely ask the employees for approval on the proposed change. The problem with that scenario is that, it is the employees who will be responsible for effecting the change and complying with them. So, the logical question would be: why aren’t you seeking the approval of the people who would be necessarily bound by the change? Organisations have to learn to engage for change. Below is a 5 step process that any organisation can adopt in engaging their employees: 1. Its in the rationale, not the idea The main problem with change is that organisations always attempt to present the plan rather than rationalise the need for change. Employees often want to understand the underlying rationale before they at all agree to the change. So, appeal to your employee’s sense in presenting the rationale before the idea itself 2. Understand employee groups Very often employees are grouped in teams of people who think alike. So understand the people in the organisation and analyse what manner of presentation would agree to them. Understand the concerns from their perspective and strive to address different groups based on their point of view not the presenters. 3. Counter resistance immediately There will always be resistance from one guy. You want to tackle that guy immediately instead of him aligning partners. So personal engagement for tough groups or influential individuals may become necessarily. 4. Be prepared for alternative ideas When you engage, engage openly to receive ideas from employees. Don’t resist idea because you never know where the next big idea may come from. Engagement is about positive communications. 5. Plan as a team Plan the roll-out of your new plan with the team. Most organisations just present them and it doesn’t convenience everyone affected. If you plan it together, then chances of your employees implementing is higher as they helped you design / implement it.
