ENGLAND vs. POLAND Hodgson persists in playing Sturridge and Welbeck in same team. They are too similar. Both have great speed and go off running like hares with seemingly no idea (in the -- one thought inimitable-- style of Walcott) of knowing where they are going. All too often they end up running down blind alleys or take hopeful long range shots that go nowhere when other teammates are better placed – Welbeck is particularly guilty of that MO. Better to play Defoe up front who can dance his way with pace through a questionable defense and put the ball in the net with either foot from inside or outside the penalty area. Townsend proved the validity of that approach against Montenegro. Hope he has a similar game on the right flank today while Baines does the same on the left. Carrick is a good pick. If on form he can hold when needed and thread telling passes from any range to the front men. Still football has a history of repeating itself and theres the nagging fear for us pessimists who have been through all Englands traumas that Arsenal’s goalkeeper Szczesny may emulate Tomaszewski’s heroics from 1973. (P.S. The sooner Rooney gets rid of that headband the sooner he’ll stop looking like he’s auditioning to be an extra in a re-make of Richard III.)
