ENGLISH AROUND THE WORLD Yesterday evening, we ran a free workshop for British Council students on English Around the World. We looked at how English is evolving due to international influences and also at different English accents and vocabulary in different places. We had a few mini quizzes, and congratulations to the winning team Accent Losers on getting the most points! (see their happy picture below) One quiz they did very well at was guessing the origins of some commonly used English words. Such as robot and pistol, which of course come from Czech. Can any of you beat the workshop participants and correctly match these words with the language of their origin? 1. guitar 2. zero 3. umbrella 4. sauna 5. shampoo a. Arabic b. Finnish c. Hindi d. Spanish e. Italian
