ENGLISH IN TROUBLE AGAIN. The following sin is committed with some frequency at large, but it is on WIKIPEDIA where it comes to my most frequent attention. The Present Perfect is supposed to be used for action or occurrence at an unspecified time in the past, not excluding right up to the present. It is INCORRECT to say, “So-and-so has been associate conductor until 1981.” If you want to omit “until 1981,” then “has been” is just fine. For a specific time in the past and/or it’s long finished and done with, use the past tense or the past perfect. I suppose part of the problem is the sheer number of contributors to WIKI, and I’m sure they are usually doing the best they can. What I find helpful is that if I gravitate to the fewest words necessary to make my statement, that generally improves my grammar as well. End of rant.
