ENVIOUS OR JEALOUS? Often times, I find people mistake envy for jealousy but they are clearly distinct words with different connotations. Envy is healthy and positive, jealousy is not! It is normal for human beings to be a bit envious of one anothers progress and positively coveting same but jealousy is a different ball game altogether and it can lead to dangerous competition, strife and even death! Envy simply so called is a feeling of discontentment or resentful longing aroused by someone elses possessions, qualities, luck and progress. It is the desire to have a quality, possession, or other desirable attribute belonging to someone else without trying to bring down the person. Envy was formed from the Latin word invidia meaning covet. It is an emotion which occurs when a person lacks anothers superior quality or achievement. It is a feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to anothers advantages, success, possessions or achievement with no strife or unhealthy competition. Jealousy on the other hand is an unruly emotion and the word refers to the negative thoughts and feelings of insecurity, fear and anxiety over an anticipated loss of something of great personal value, particularly in reference to a human connection. Jealousy often consists of a combination of emotions such as anger, resentment, insufficiency, inadequacy, helplessness and disgust. In its original meaning, jealousy is distinct from envy, though the two terms have popularly but erroneously become synonymous in the English language. Any jealous resentment against a rival, a person enjoying success or advantage or accomplishment is jealousy properly so-called. Jealousy is competing against anothers success or advantage itself. It entails the mental uneasiness from suspicion or fear of rivalry, unfaithfulness. Jealousy is witchcraft! When you find yourself hating another and wishing his or her accomplishments, become yours whilst the person loses, just forget it, you are no longer envious, you are a witch! -Tosin Ayo, (The word bank)
