ENVIRONMENT: A list of six coastal species which could be seriously affected by erosion and climate change has been unveiled by the National Trust. It includes the Triggerfish, which have begun to turn up off the coast of North Wales. It is a species normally found in warmer waters, but its appearance off UK coasts gives a taste of the non-native arrivals climate change could bring to our seas. But while newcomers such as the triggerfish are on the increase, some coastal species including puffins and little terns could be at risk. The National Trust said the UK coastline was already being affected by rising sea levels, with projections suggesting that seas could be half a metre higher than at present by 2100, and increased erosion. Warming seas and increases in unpredictable weather as a result of climate change could also have a major impact on coast habitats and wildlife, the trust said.
