EPA awards additional funding to target algal blooms The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) funds totaling more than $3.1 million to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to target algal blooms in Lake Erie. In August 2014, EPA met with state and federal agencies to identify priority actions to reduce algal blooms in the western Lake Erie basin. Grants totaling $8.6 million were awarded to the states of Ohio, Indiana and Michigan in October to implement many of these projects. The additional GLRI funding will be awarded as follows: $1 million to NOAA and $900,000 to the U.S. Geological Survey to improve algal bloom forecasting and water quality testing $1 million to the Natural Resources and Conservation Service for agricultural conservation practices in the western Lake Erie basin $197,000 to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to improve nutrient management on Michigan farms Information about the GLRI is available at glri.us/.
