EPISODE: 21 TO LOVE IS A CRIME [Part 2]* Felix sat quietly on the cream coloured couch his arms on the back rest. Liams face was gloomy too and Temitope sat quietly beside Liam,her hands on his laps. What happened to Rebecca?She asked,her voice a pitch high,as she looked from her father to her brothers face. Nothing. Felix said,Just have your seat. Rachael sat on the arm of the couch,her heart raced rapidly. So why is everyone wearing a gloom across their face? Doctor James called me this afternoon. Dr. Ajikole said,that was the doctor treating Rebecca. Is she awake already? Rachael asked,even when the looks on their face said otherwise. The doctor wants to speak to us. Dr Ajikole said. Were leaving for the hospital in an hours time. Liam said,his voice was down and held so much weight. It was a very awkward proceeding when the Ajikoles trooped into the mini bus,like a group of snail going on an excursion. The bus had three rows,Dr Ajikole and Baby liam sat on the first,followed by Rachael and Temitope and sitting on the last row was Felix and Liam. There was grave silence in the bus except for baby liams chattering and his occasional laughter. The toddler was a carbon copy of his father,smooth skin and cute eyes. Temitope tried to make conversation with Rachael but it was fruitless as she only answered in monosyllables. she gave up and concentrated. Felix felt this awkwardness as he sat by an innocent looking Liam. He just kept mute and looked out of the window,that would distract him for a while. The breeze flowed in freely through the opened glass, Rachael watched the trees and houses disappearing very fast. She tried as much as she could not to think about her sister. what would happen to their family if Rebecca died? God forbid she said causing the others to look at her,she looked away quickly and wished the driver would be fast. It was an hours drive to DMG memorial hospital. They finally arrived at the hospital,exactly one hour forty minutes no thanks to Lagos traffic. They got down from the bus and filed into the hospital. Rachael walked beside Felix,he had been quiet all along. The nurse who attended to them ushered them to a waiting room,no other person was there except the Ajikoles,it was different from the waiting area. The doctor would attend to them in a few minutes. Rachael asked if she could take a look at her sister,the nurse agreed and she left followed by Temitope and Felix. The nurse opened the door to Rebeccas private ward. she was the only one in the large room,the oxygen tank was by the bed and the oxygen pipe ran into her nose. The room was filled with the many flowers she and the others had brought for her,ever since she was brought,she had not opened her eyes. Her pregnancy sat there in her stomach,she looked like someone taking a brief nap. but this was more than a nap. she had been here for weeks. Rebecca. she called quietly,holding her hands. Temitope touched her shoulders as tears flowed freely down her face. Just answer me sweet sister,i cant bear to lose you. she cried,temitope was crying too. Felix stood some meters apart watching the ladies cry. If only you will wake up,if only you could hear my voice,Rebecca Ajikole its me your twin sister Racheal. We still love you,please wake up. The nurse had to force her out of the ward when she began to shake Rebecca furiously. It took some minutes to calm her down. Finally the doctor came to address the family,Good afternoon he greeted. It was only Dr Ajikole who responded to his greeting. That didnt deter Doctor James from speaking on. Hmmm hmmm he coughed bringing everyone to look at him. I called you all to inform you that well be taking Rebecca off the oxygen tank.he said without looking at anyone in particular. Why? Felix asked. The doctor shook his head,This is because shes been in comatose for some weeks now. Shes going to die doctor. Rachael said her voice trembled as she spoke. That is,if she isnt dead already. Doctor James cant we give her more time? Liam asked even when his brain had answered that question already. Its eight weeks already,and as you know that patients who fall into coma usually take two days to thirty days and in strange cases,six weeks. Liam was quite familiar with the situation on ground,such patients are taken off the oxygen tank after six weeks. he thought about asking for a transfer to his hospital but he realised that would mean giving false hope to his family if she didnt wake up eventually. he gave up. Dr Ajikole was silent all along,he understood perfectly well all that was happening. As a professional doctor who had been practising for good twenty five years before retiring. Is this to say Rebecca is gone. Racheal asked. The doctor looked at her with pity,Yes dear,she has passed away. May her soul rest in perfect peace. WATCHOUT FOR EPISODE 22
