EQUINE RESCUE STEPS IN TO HELP LAME PONY IN INDIANTOWN By Jan Lindsey Published Friday, September 27, 2013 MARTIN COUNTY — Blanca is one lucky but lame pony. She is recuperating at the Equine Rescue & Adoption Foundation property in Palm City after being removed from a farm in Indiantown owned by a man who told someone from the foundation that she had been ill for more than a month. Martin County agricultural detective Ben Fennell said Blanca had gotten into a bag of corn, which made her sick. She lay down and couldn’t get up again, which caused a painful swelling of her feet, a condition known as laminitis. A caller notified authorities Saturday afternoon that a pony was in trouble on the farm in the 16000 block of Southwest Morgan Street. When deputies and an animal control officer got to the farm, they found Blanca dehydrated, malnourished and running a temperature, according to a sheriff’s report. The owner said he had tried to feed and water Blanca, but didn’t know what was wrong with her. He asked authorities to take Blanca because he didn’t know how to care for her, the report said. He signed Blanca and his healthy male pony over to the foundation. Fennell said he did not charge the owner because he voluntarily surrendered the ponies and did not intentionally abuse the lame female. “For charges to be filed, we have to see signs of neglect,” Fennell said. “The owner had good intentions for the animal. “He just didn’t know exactly what he was doing.” Fortunately, the people at the foundation do. Fennell visited Blanca on Friday morning and said she had put on a little weight and was standing and walking a bit.
