ERADICATING LIMITING BELIEFS. A belief is a combination of a set of ideas, concepts, and values that we assume to be true. The belief may come from outside sources (books, parents, teachers) or from inner experiences that help you make sense of yourself and the world. Examples: I believe in God (or the Big Bang), I believe Im attractive (or not), I believe that everyone should have equal opportunity, or the nasty ones, like I believe Ill never succeed at ______. Neurologically, a belief is a memory circuit based on past events that the brain assumes is objectively true in the world. For example, if you imagine holding a cup in your hand, if you let it go, floor. Your brain assumes that gravity is real and always exists. Thats why people are so amazed when they experience no gravity...it doesnt make sense to the habituated idea that has existed from the time of birth. Getting rid of an old, useless, or limited belief can be very hard because that neural circuit has formed incredibly deep structural connections. You can build a new belief and thus weaken the old one, but under stress, the old belief can be easily re-stimulated. This is particularly true for painful memories, and why PTSD is so difficult to eliminate. 2 questions for you: what do you think are the most difficult limiting beliefs are to get rid of, and what do you think are the best strategies to undermine a belief that currently holds you back in your life?
