For now, nothing further has been released about the death of Gregory Hill Jr., 30, of the 1500 block of Avenue Q, or a handgun he had, according to St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Adam Goodner. Deputies fired at Hill as he was lowering a garage door just after deputies ordered him to put down a gun, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. “Fearing for their lives,” one deputy fired, puncturing holes in the now lowered garage door, the reports state. After the shooting, deputies couldn’t see if Hill was injured. In a statement released Wednesday, Sheriff Ken Mascara said a man who identified himself as Hill’s uncle told investigators he had just talked to Hill by phone and Hill was “alive and uninjured, but afraid to come out.” Sheriff’s deputies closed off the area and called in a SWAT unit. About 150 students in an after-school program at Frances K. Sweet Magnet School were transferred to Lincoln Park Academy . About four hours later, a remote camera inserted through the garage door showed Hill motionless on the floor. The autopsy may show what time Hill died and where he had been shot. The incident started around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday when a parent waiting to pick up a student from the magnet school complained to the Sheriff’s Office about hearing profane music from across the street. Loud noises can be a violation of county ordinances and state law. Under state law, breaching the peace can be a misdemeanor offense. When two deputies arrived, they heard loud music coming from Hill’s closed garage. They knocked on doors at the house as well as the garage. According to the reports, when the garage door opened Hill was inside with a gun at his side. Hill’s relatives said the incident occurred as he was getting ready to get his two daughters, ages 9 and 6, who attend Frances K. Sweet. Hill’s criminal record includes cocaine possession and disorderly conduct charges in 2012. His other run-ins with law enforcement, since 2002, range from DUI to obstruction of justice without violence. Both deputies involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave pending the investigation into the gunfire
