ERIC THE RED HERRING History shows that the Viking Eric the Red was the first ocean-going explorer to cross the Atlantic and make landfall on Greenland and Iceland. Later Erics son Leif carried the family tradition even further by becoming the first European to land in North America, nearly 500 years before Christopher Columbus. But, little has been said about a daring red herring named Eric the Red. Eric was the first herring to swim the Atlantic non-stop from one side of that cold bathtub to the other after drinking heavily, making Michael Phelps look like a whip. Eric is best known as the father of the herrings, giving rise to the most populous fish in the sea. In fact, so populous that the major predators of the sea, including, Orcas, dolphins, porpoises, whales, seals, sharks, billfish tuna, salmon, striped bass, cod, halibut and last, but not in the least, man. Herrings are the most commercially important species to humans and have a staple of mans diet since 3000 BC, which prompted Eric the Red to mutter his famous anthem. I never intended to mislead anyone. MDP, have a good day.
