ESCAPE FROM BERAKAS! 1962 BRUNEI REVOLT This title is from a book written by Zariani Abdul Rahman. this book is out of print and Zariana sadly, is no longer with us. Every one knows of Nelson Mandela who was a political prisoner for 27years. A few may know of Chia Thye Poh who was detained without trail for 23 years and further under house arrest for 9 years, in Singapore. Barely any one knows Brunei had political prisoners who were detained under ISA for 30 years, from Dec 1962 - 7 Jan 1990. Nobody knows of Awang Tinggal bin Mohamad, Awang Suhaili bin Badas and Sarponen bin Sarmo who spent 27 years inside Berakas for their nationalism and political ideals. The suffering of the 2342 Parti Rakyat Brunei (PRB) and Tentera Nasional Kalimantan Utara (TNKU) pejuang who fought for an independent and democratic Brunei in 1962 is unknown and untold. The greatest tragedy is, it is unfinished. In 1974, under ‘Operation Liberty’, eight political detainees who detained for their involvement in the independence uprising in 1962 – Yassin Affandy, Zaini Hj Ahmad, Osman Abdul Latiff, Sheikh Salleh Sheikh dMahmud, Abdul Samad Jamaludin, Mohamad Yusof Ibrahim, Omar Tamin and Abdul Ghani Metussin made a dash for freedom in a prison break-out from Berakas. They were to be granted political asylum in Malaysia. Today, we welcome Abdul Ghani Metussin to Kuching, (one of the eight escapees) who took the long ride overland from Limbang to participate in our public forum on Malaysia Agreement this Sunday. Ghani will speak of his bittersweet memories of the struggle of PRB and of the vision by PRB/SUPP/Pasok Momogun for a gabungan of three territories – Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo - and of the nationalism struggle of the peoples of Brunei, Sarawak and North Borneo for liberty and democracy.
