ESsay: The Conflicted SOUL (Understanding our inner struggles) The Soul has a unique composition as the internal government structure of the individual. Its Intellectual and emotional branches are designed to sustain a proper foundational balance upon which the will can make sound decisions. It is not always the case that this proper balance is possible; which is why some decisions are easy while others get held up in lengthy deliberations. If no contemplated decision seems acceptable to either the intellect or the emotion, it is safe to say that the SOUL is conflicted. Both branches of the SOUL can be either credible or dis credible at times. An intellect based on incomplete information can be just as detrimental as an emotion based on carnal bias. You can never say that your thinking is always superior to your feeling; and SOMETIMES if it doesnt feel right, it may just be all the indicator you need that it isnt right. The commitment to integrity between insight and instinct must be worked out in a will that remains true to the character of the individual; else a conflicted soul will become a disconsolate one. In my years of sharing The OYIS Concept, I have observed that the will of most people is forced to choose sides with either branch. Do we go with (or trust) what we see or how we feel? Seldom does anyone vet the information of the intellect AND the impulse of the emotion. Some take a philosophical stance towards one or the other; choosing its preference as a default in all matters. But, if the quality of our life is inextricably tried to the quality of our decisions, we must learn to make some significant progress in working out our Soul Salvation. The salvation of our SOUL serves a two fold purpose. It is not JUST to prepare us for heaven; but also (and equally important) to prepare us to function holistically on our earthly pilgrimage. We have far too many people with redeemed crippled souls uninterested in addressing the infirmity that keeps them from being whole. We have trust issues that discourage collaborations and prevent unity, and we have fears that hinder faith and muffle hope. In essence, we cant get along for any serious length of time with other people because our saved SOUL has not fully become a safe one. But, God knew we would struggle like this; and He had a plan. Jesus spoke of a Comforter that would abide in us to simultaneously contribute to the healing of the SOUL while serving as a counselor to reconcile it to a status of peace with God and man. This comforter will create a climate for proper faith that summons both branches of the Soul to consent when they have trouble agreeing. So, then, my conflicting soul finds great assurance in the fact that my will has help to reconcile the two branches with a resident divine wisdom that exceeds its own. I dont always know what to do when my mind and my heart starts to wrestle over an acceptable decision. But, I do know this: If I increase my respect for the Holy Spirit that is given to teach, lead and guide me, the conflict between how I think and how I feel will be resolved by the FAITH that makes my decisions work regardless. The Holy Spirit performs in us only to the extent that our respect grows for Him; and He will serve as peacekeeper for our conflicting SOUL. Erwin Scofield | #oyiscoach
