EU AMBASSADOR VISITS EU-FUNDED MICRO PROJECTS On 21 October 2014, EU Ambassador to Swaziland, Nicola Bellomo, visited five social infrastructure projects which are all funded by the EU and implemented under the 10th EDF (European Development Fund) Micro Projects Programme and are meant to, amongst other things, improve access to water and sanitation facilities in rural and peri-urban areas, improve agricultural outputs to ensure food security and empower communities to participate in decentralised governance. The Ambassador visited the projects, all in the Manzini region, to familiarize himself with their impact to local communities. The projects are part of a total of 90 micro projects implemented countrywide under this programme and benefitting almost 50 000 rural and peri-urban people. Each of the projects is funded to a maximum amount of E100 000. During the tour led by a team from Micro Projects, the implementing partner, as well as the EUs Programme Manager, Ms Nonto Mabuza, the Ambassador also got the opportunity to meet and interact with beneficiaries who all paid tribute to the EU for funding these projects which they said have brought a huge difference in their lives. The first stop of the visit was Mvubula Primary School at Sigombeni where the EU funded a water supply project to the school for the benefit of its 250 pupils and teachers. The project involved the supply of piping, source protection and water tanks. Ambassador Bellomo later visited Ludzeludze Primary School where the EU funded the construction of boys toilets and urinary section. He also visited Embikwakhe Primary School where the EU funded the construction of a kitchen facility for feeding of the schools pupils. The last leg of the visit was Manzini Industrial Training Centre (MITC) and St Josephs Mission, both in Manzini. At MITC Ambassador Bellomo was shown training equipment for mechanics, carpentry and electrical tools which were all supplied with funding from the EU whilst at St Josephs Mission the Ambassador was shows equipment for carpentry used by children living with disability.
