EU CONGRATULATES WINNERS OF WOMAN FARMER OF THE YEAR 2014 EU Ambassador, Nicola Bellomo, has congratulated the winners of this years Woman Farmer of Year Competition who were awarded during an eventful prize giving ceremony held on 30 October 2014 at Mpophoma Conference and Training Centre near Luyengo in the Manzini region. The event, was organized by the Swaziland Women Farmer Foundation, chaired by Sonia Paiva, with the support of the European Union and FAO. The event was attended by the MInister of Agriculture, Hon. Moses Vilakati. The overall winner was Mirriam Mamba, a hard-working woman farmer of KaPhunga in the Lubombo region. She beat 123 other women farmers to emerge with the first prize comprising farming equipment worth more than E50 000. Speaking at the event, Ambassador Bellomo, said gender equality and the empowerment of women are at the heart of the EU Political and Development cooperation agenda. He said the goal of the EU Development Cooperation is to support partner countriess efforts to enable the citizens to improve the quality of their lives. He added that the EU supports the development objectives of Swaziland: these objectives can hardly be achieved if more than half of the population, more than half of the human capital of the country is left behind. They can only be achieved if women are empowered and fully integrated in the political and economic life of the country. The Ambassador then paid tribute to all the women who took part in the women farmer of the year competition and said their courage and determination has paved the way for future generations in Swaziland.
