EU, GALP JOIN CAMPAIGN TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN, GIRLS On 4 December 2014, the European Union, in partnership with Galp Swaziland, an oil company, launched a joint campaign on the elimination of violence against women and girls as part of the ongoing International Commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence which began on 25 November 2014 ending on 10 December 2014. The launch held at Galp service station in Mbabane, was also graced by the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Paul Dlamini, and the Minister of Home Affairs, Princess Tsandzile, who was standing in for the Minister of Economic Planning and Development, Prince Hlangusemphi. Speaking during this occasion, EU Ambassador to Swaziland, Nicola Bellomo, said the EU was proud to partner with the private sector in raising awareness on issues of gender-based violence. He said this campaign was very important because it provides the opportunity to raise awareness and to challenge the culture of silence and impunity when it comes to issues of violence against women and girls. Ambassador Bellomo also said the campaign further allows humankind to renew once again the commitment to end the abuse and violence against women and girls around the world. He concluded with a quote by the UN Secretary General who stated: We need to say to man and boys; do not raise your hands in violence; raise your voice to stop it and support human rights for all. The DPM, on the other hand, congratulated both the EU and Galp on this initiative saying the campaign against gender-based violence was very important because womens rights are human rights. The campaign will end with a raffle draw whereby motorists who fill petrol at Galp service stations will stand to win fabulous prizes. The entries to the competition were also launched on 4 December 2014 when the DPM handed the first entry form to a female motorist who was filling petrol at the Galp station in Mbabane where the event was held.
