EVEN ING NEWS On the local scene Students and Teachers who have made significant achievements under the Schools Cooperative Programme will be recognized for their efforts this week. They will be honored by the Cooperative Department in the Ministry of National Mobilization at the National Schools Cooperative Awards, set to take place tomorrow. The Department says the objectives of the Awards Ceremony are to highlight the importance of thrift in the growth and development of the School Co-operative Program; to acknowledge the tremendous financial achievements by several students in the Program and to recognize school cooperatives as a platform for early youth entrepreneurship The opening ceremony tomorrow will hear brief remarks from several Senior Public Servants and Leaders in the Cooperative Sector. The Awards Ceremony is being held as part of activities to observe Cooperative Month. The ceremony will be held at the Peace Memorial Hall from nine tomorrow morning. And Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the Government remains committed to addressing the issues affecting residents at the housing development in Clear Valley. Dr. Gonsalves gave this commitment, as he addressed the media on Saturday during a news conference held at the VIP Lounge of the E.T. Joshua Airport, following his return from Cuba, where he has been receiving medical attention. The Prime Minister maintained that the Government accepts full responsibility for the issues which have arisen in relation to the houses in Clear Valley, which were constructed by the Housing and Land Development Corporation. His assurance follows the collapse last month of a three-bedroom house, which was part of the development. The Prime Minister said the ULP administration has a clear policy, in relation to housing. On the regional scene in KINGSTON, Jamaica -Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has invited Members of Parliament to Jamaica House for a meeting Tuesday morning regarding current health threats. The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) has sent invitations to all 63 MPs to a meeting to update them on the chikungunya response and the Ebola threat. The meeting will begin at 11:00 am in the banquet hall at Office of the Prime Minister and will also involve members of the national response team. Simpson Miller activated the National Response Mechanism last week, in an effort to channel more resources into dealing with the current chikungunya outbreak, and to look at the preparedness for the Ebola threat. Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson said Saturday that efforts to clean up communities and destroy mosquito breeding sites should be ongoing all year round. Ferguson said that the idea is to demonstrate the Government’s commitment, while motivating citizens to take their responsibility seriously with respect to the reduction of the spread of vector borne diseases. More on the regional scene in ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Heavy rains and hurricane-force winds shut down the twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda today as Tropical Storm Gonzalo swept over the island downing power lines as well as causing floods in several areas. Gonzalo, the seventh named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, also triggered an island-wide power outage and forced the closure of schools and businesses. Director of Operations at the VC Bird International Airport (VCBIA) said the airport would remain closed until 8.00am Tuesday, resulting in the cancellation of several regional and international flights. Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the activation of the National Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in order to effectively manage the response to the storm. Social Transformation Minister Samantha Marshall confirmed that shelters open were in open the flood-prone areas of the island. Meanwhile, local disaster officials are concerned that people who are not essential personnel are putting themselves and others in danger. In neighbouring St. Kitts-Nevis, the authorities there have announced the closure of government offices and schools and are urging residents to remain indoors as the storm passes through the chain of islands. The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that the storm was 10 miles north west of Antigua and that the authorities have issued a hurricane watch for the island. A hurricane watch remains in effect Puerto Rico, St. Martin and the United States Virgin islands, while a tropical storm warning remains in effect for several islands, including St. Barthelemy, St. Maartin, St. Eustatius, Saba, Anguilla, St. Kitts-Nevis as well as Montserrat.
