EVENIA HAS BEEN DETAINED — AGAIN Leicester grandmother Evenia Mawongera is in detention. She is currently in transit to Colnbrook Immigration Detention Centre where is going to be held pending deportation to Zimbabwe. Evenia was detained today at the Loughborough Immigration Reporting Centre where she had gone to report as she has been doing every Friday since July. When she got there she was taken to a side room and told that the further submissions she made on 16 August had been rejected and that she was being detained pending transfer to a detention centre and then on to Zimbabwe. When she was detained Evenia was not given the chance to go over the reasons for refusal with her solicitor. Evenia, an outspoken critic of the Mugabe regime, has been living in Leicester with her children and grandchildren for the past 10 years and is a highly regarded member of the community. On 22 August, she received a special commendation in the Good Neighbour Awards in recognition of her contribution to Leicester . She is a member of the Zimbabwe Association Choir and is one of the people who performed for the Queen when she came to Leicester in June 2012 to mark the start of her Diamond Jubilee tour . Evenia is also a member of the Zimbabwe Action in Solidarity (ZAS) Leicester and the human rights and pro-democracy groups, ZimVigil and Restoration of Human Rights (ROHR) Zimbabwe. She has no family in Zimbabwe. Her children and grandchildren, with whom she has been living for the past 10 years, are British citizens. If deported to Zimbabwe, Evenia is at risk of persecution and extremely serious ill-treatment at the hands of the Mugabe regime. WHAT YOU CAN DO: 1.
