EVENT: Saturday July 6, 2013 Our 86th monthly survey Austin Colony to Webberville 108 degrees in June. It is summer. It is hot. Please protect yourself. This month’s river survey is an eight mile section of river between Austin Colony and the Village of Webberville. Expect to be on the river 4 - 8 hours. This is a nice section of river and we always get some good birds and other critters. We should find all the regular summer species and there should be plenty of fledglings to challenge us. I just checked the flow rate and the LCRA still is releasing water. They are pulsing at the Longhorn Dam and the flow in Bastrop is about 500 CFS. We may be able to take advantage of this release and ride a bubble. However, this can be stopped at any moment without notice. Remember, this trip is intended to be a survey of the riparian ecosystem and not necessarily a recreational trip. RIVER FLOW RATES: tx.usgs.gov/infodata/basins.html Click on the Colorado River basin 08158000 Colorado Rv at Austin, TX We meet at the CER at 8:00 AM. As a group we will caravan Austin Colony. Please meet at the CER. We should be there by 8:15 - 8:30 There we will unload gear. This area is a huge park to launch with lots of room. We will then shuttle the cars to Webberville. We will all pile into as few cars as necessary to go back upstream to the gear. This scenario leaves most cars at the downstream location. We will float together as a group. When we get down to Webberville, we load gear and the survey is officially done. DRIVING DIRECTIONS TO THE CER: The Center for Environmental Research is in eastern Travis County. If coming from the downtown area. Take 19th Street / MLK / Hwy 969 and go east. You will go east of Airport Blvd, east of Hwy 183. About 4 miles east of Hwy 183 is Hwy 973. Turn right (South) on Hwy 973. After about 4 miles the CER will be on the right just past a pecan grove. Turn in and meet us in the parking lot. If you cross the river, you have gone too far. If coming from south Austin. Take Hwy 71 east to the light at Hwy 973, this is just past the airport. Turn Left on Hwy 973 and go north across the river about a mile. The CER will be a left. If coming from north Austin. Take Hwy 183 south to MLK. Turn left on MLK and go east about 4 miles to HWY 973. Turn right on Hwy 973 and go south about 4 miles. The CER will be on the right just past a pecan grove. If you cross the river, you have gone too far. EXPECTED SPECIES: It is summer and all the expected species should be found. There are plenty of juveniles now making identification a bit more challenging.
