EVERETT SCHOOL DISTRICT PSAT COST CLAIMS IN QUESTION The Herald is reporting that the Everett School District is claiming they pay a cost of $25 per student to take the PSAT. The public should be asking questions, and heres why -- the cost of a PSAT test is NOT $25, it is only $14. This is a fact easily checked by consulting the College Board who produces and scores the test; here is the link: collegeboard/student/testing/psat/reg/dates.html If the District is claiming it is paying more than DOUBLE per student to administer this test, someone ought to ask them (like maybe a newspaper reporter, lol): Why? WHY are you paying that much? Another fact students, their parents, and taxpaying patrons of the Everett School District should know is that a student does NOT need Junior standing to be eligible to sit for the PSAT. 9th graders and even middle schoolers and earlier grades are eligible to take the test as well, as there is no minimum grade or age requirement. This fact should be broadcasted widely by the Everett School District (I have publicly called for this), but it is not: professionals.collegeboard/testing/sat-reasoning/register/special/8th-grade $14 is a very small price to pay for a student to be able to learn where he/she stands in any year(s) prior to taking the SAT. Many kids would benefit from taking the test earlier than 11th grade. It is a disservice not to make this fact widely known. One more thing: Public schools in WA used to widely make the PSAT free for high school juniors at least as far as the early 1980s when I was in high school. Its a little bit humorous to me that now that this practice is being restored in Everett, it is newsworthy and the Everett school district is being quoted as though it is the forefront of developing college readiness. Im all for giving credit where credit is due when an entity goes above and beyond expectations, but are we really at the point where we laud a public school district for doing what it is SUPPOSED to be doing, especially when we give them so much money to do it (almost half the states budget)? Watch for the Everett School District to threaten that being able to provide the PSAT test to Juniors will be dependent upon the passage of the next levy. I can practically guarantee it will be one of their focal points.
