EVERETT — TREES SAVED AT AMERICAN LEGION PARK: Today after the Tribunes press time this morning, Mayor Ray Stephanson directed city parks staff to not go through with a plan to chop down about 80 old growth trees at American Legion Memorial Park. Instead of removing the trees, crews working for the state Department of Ecology will clean the root systems of all trees by hand using manual digging and compressed air to try to restore the trees health. The city says there is a risk that weaker trees may not survive if they do not improve. The removal plan to chop down around 80 trees caused outcry among neighbors and residents.
