EVERYBODY LOVES TEXAS MOVIE REVIEWS LONESOME DOVE (1989) I rate this mini-series 5 stars out of 5 This is the epic story about two former Texas rangers who decide to move cattle from the south to Montana. Augustus McCrae and Woodrow Call run into many problems on the way, and the journey doesnt end without numerous casualties. Larry McMurtry, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall, what more may one say other than it is the best combination there could ever be helping us confirm the special character and history of Texas. The book was outstanding and equally so, was this television mini-series. An adventurous and fascinating story, only enhanced by the outstanding performances by the actors. I will never tire of this film, I doubt others will either. I believe many generations of young people to come will enjoy the genre of the Western movie at its best because of this film. It ranks up there with Shane, The Searchers, Red River and the The Outlaw Josey Wales as the best Westerns of all time. No need to repeat all the superlatives that have been rightly heaped upon this film, except to say it deserves them all. A masterpiece of storytelling and film-making, Lonesome Dove took the television miniseries to new heights usually reserved for sprawling, Oscar-winning epics. Watching any of the four installments makes it clear why it received a staggering 20 Emmy nominations, winning seven although it was ultimately robbed for Outstanding Miniseries by the excellent, but inferior War and Remembrance series. Further, Robert Duvals incredible performance ranks among one of the greatest ever on big or small screen was not properly rewarded as the Emmy that year in the male actor category went to James Woods for a mediocre performance in My Name Is Bill W.
