EVERYBODY LOVES TEXAS MOVIE REVIEWS TWO FOR TEXAS (1978) I rate this film as 3.25 stars out of 5 In 1836, two prisoners (native Texan Kris Kristofferson and Scott Bairstow) escape from a Louisiana chain gang run by a vicious strong boss. In the process of the escape, the strong boss is killed which sets his brother, the ex-warden (Victor Rivers) on a chase of the men. However, the two join up with Sam Houstons (Tom Skerritt) army to fight in the revolution. The ex-warden then sells guns to the Mexicans which leads to the Alamo massacre and the death of their friend, Jim Bowie (Peter Coyote). The two then lead the avenging charge at San Jacinto that settles the war. The story is not without annoying historical flaws. When will writers learn that telling it the way it really happened is a more exciting tale than they could ever make invent. Several of the historical events have been modified and some depicted out of sequence. The film leaves one with a false impression of how things actually transpired, but it is well paced and it never loses momentum. The film benefited greatly from Kristoffersons craggy Texas drawl. This is the kind of role Kris does best, and he plays it to the hilt! Two for Texas is a flawed but thoughtful addition to the small group of acceptable films about the Alamo, and the Texas struggle for independence.
