EVERYONE SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT PHYSICIAN ORDERS FOR LIFE-SUSTAINING TREATMENT Today I want to bring your attention to something not very pleasant to think about, but nevertheless extremely important and that is end of life decisions. No matter the age unfortunately we need to have a clear idea on what we want to be done for us and for our family if faced with end of life decisions or a disease deemed to have a grave prognosis. It pains me to admit this, but in today seismic cultural shift from the past, hospitals and many medical providers tend to prematurely withdraw life sustaining treatments. POLST ( The acronyms varies from state to state) is definitely tilted toward non-treatment. POLST is also a very important document that when signed will dictate how we get treated. My recommendation as a physician who values life and totally respects the value of each individual and his/her family is NOT to sign a POLST document. If you happen to find yourself in this kind of situation just keep on saying that you have a Durable Power of Attorney for Health care which will go into effect and please respect my wishes. By the way please make sure you have such a document. Also be aware that so call trained facilitators NOT doctors ask patients questions and check the boxes in the POLST document. After that the POLST becomes a very powerful document very visible on the order sheet part of the patient medical chart and it MAY RENDER THE PERSON YOU APPOINTED AS YOUR AGENT IN YOUR DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR HEALTH CARE POWERLESS TO PROTECT YOU!!! Sorry to start your day on this note, but I have been reading a lot about this issue and I realize very few people have a full understanding of this. You and your family or whomever you have appointed as your legal agent should be in charge of your medical decision. Please take sometime to read and share it with your family. It could save yourself from having to face unnecessary agonizing moments.
