EVERYTHINGS COOL! But she said, It will be all right.” (2 Kings 4:23 ~NLT) (From 2 Kings 4:8-37 ~NLT) A woman noticed that Elisha regularly came to their town of Shunem. She didnt know him. She could have ignored him but she didnt. Instead, she honours him. God records her generosity: She said to her husband, I am sure this man who stops in from time to time is a holy man of God. Let’s build a small room for him on the roof and furnish it with a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp. Then he will have a place to stay whenever he comes by.” (9, 10) Whenever he comes by. In other words, she wanted him to keep coming. She wanted him to know that he was welcome. Elisha was grateful and wanted to repay her. Elisha said to Gehazi (his servant),Tell her, ‘We appreciate the kind concern you have shown us. What can we do for you? (v. 13) She replied that all was okay. But Elisha really wanted to bless her. Later Elisha asked Gehazi, What can we do for her? Gehazi replied, She doesn’t have a son, and her husband is an old man. Call her back again, Elisha told him. When the woman returned, Elisha said to her as she stood in the doorway, Next year at this time you will be holding a son in your arms!”” (v. 14-16) But sure enough, the woman soon became pregnant. And at that time the following year she had a son, just as Elisha had said. (v. 17) Some years later, while working with his father, the child felt very ill, was taken to his mother, and he died in her presence. (v. 20) What is a mother to do? This is what she did. She sent a message to her husband: Send one of the servants and a donkey so that I can hurry to the man of God and come right back.” (v. 22) Hurry to the man of God, was her goal! Would you say that? Is your hope in God? When she found Elisha, she said, “As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I won’t go home unless you go with me. So Elisha returned with her. (v. 30) When Elisha arrived, the child was indeed dead, lying there on the prophet’s bed. He went in alone and shut the door behind him and prayed to the LORD. Then he lay down on the child’s body, placing his mouth on the child’s mouth, his eyes on the child’s eyes, and his hands on the child’s hands. And as he stretched out on him, the child’s body began to grow warm again! Elisha got up, walked back and forth across the room once, and then stretched himself out again on the child. This time the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes! Then Elisha summoned Gehazi. Call the child’s mother! he said. And when she came in, Elisha said, Here, take your son! She fell at his feet and bowed before him, overwhelmed with gratitude. Then she took her son in her arms and carried him downstairs. (v. 32-37) She bowed! This is the first time that it is recorded that she expressed this form of great reverence. Not only that, there is no mention that her husband or their servants believed in the God of Elisha. In fact, her husband was more concerned about their tradition! Why go today? (v. 23) Surely, after this, they must have all been bowing to the God of Elisha! Do you recall in Gods Word John 11, when Lazarus died? It happened for the glory of God. John 11:4 Jesus said to Lazarus sister, just before He raised Lazarus, “Didn’t I tell you that you would see God’s glory if you believe?” Thiis woman of Shunem believed! As a result, she saw the awesome power of the Living God! Her darkest day became her brightest day ever! God is great! This then is the message which we have heard of Him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5 (KJV) God bless His Word!
