EWU arranged a seminar on ‘Exclusive Economic Zone: Impact of Bangladesh Economy’ The government of Bangladesh wants to maximize the opportunity of explanation of marine resources after the settlement of a maritime boundary with India and Myanmar. The Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid stressed the need to develop skilled human resources for exploration, oil and gas and marine resources of the country in the exclusive economic zone of Bangladesh. The Minister said these at a seminar on ‘Exclusive Economic Zone: Impact on Bangladesh Economy’ arranged by East West University, on 18 November, 2014. The Minister said, We depend on foreigners for offshore drilling, marine resource, survey and many other similar activities. Marine resources in the country are not fully utilized due to lack of skilled human resources. He urged to universities to come forward to solve these problems by introducing subjects, such as marine biology, oceanography, etc. On the occasion, Dr. Dipu Moni, Chairperson of the parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs and a former Foreign Minister said that under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and due to the dedication and hard work of a group of experts the country was a favorable verdict in the International Court on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) issue. Rear Admiral (Retd.) Khurshed Alam, Secretary, Maritime Affairs Unit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the keynote speaker at the seminar. He said, By entering this legal process, Bangladesh nearly doubled its exclusive economic zone which is now about 1,18,813 sq km in the Bay of Bengal. The exclusive economic zone can now play a major role in the economic development of the country in future. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees and Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Prof Ahmed Shafee, the Vice Chancellor of EWU also speak on the occasion. The seminar was attended by members of the Board of Trustees, academic, diplomats, besides a large number of faculty and staff.
