EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING: Shea Quraishi teaches second grade in Memphis. Of her experience in the Stanford Teacher Education Program, she says: STEP’s general emphasis on the importance of growth mindset is something that is constantly in my mind. The joy of experiential learning in math is something I got to experience for myself during STEP, and I try every day to pass that joy on to my kids. I also am grateful to know how to make fewer assumptions when I read literature with kids — to listen rather than to speak, which is a lesson that extends to all areas of teaching. But most of all, I’d say that the biggest lesson I learned was on the importance of community. I couldn’t have had the fruitful STEP experience that I did without the support of my professors, my supervisor, my cooperating teachers, my fellow Steppies and my students.
