EXCERPT - PHOENIX BK 3 ________________________ “Don’t you worry about a thing, babe.” Abel stared at the cup of coffee that Gabe set before him. The man took a seat at the table next to him. “We’re going to take care of this.” He brushed his fingers through Abel’s hair. “Take care of you, and Devlin.” Abel nodded and sipped his coffee. “What if he won’t listen to Cole?” Abel whispered. “This is really bothering him. What if he won’t talk about it?” “Hey,” Gabe kissed his head. “You know we won’t back down until he addresses the issue. And that’s for his own good as well as yours, and ours. We love him, too, Abel,” Gabe murmured. “He’s our boy just as you are. If this reality is upsetting him to this degree, then there is more going on inside him than meets the eye. And that’s what he needs to face.” Swallowing thickly, Abel looked at him. “But what is it? We were fine before.” “Maybe on the surface,” Gabe said. “But…but why would he keep it from me?” Abel asked quietly. “Why wouldn’t he talk to me?” Gabe wrapped an arm around his shoulder. “Baby, if he is holding things back, he very likely doesn’t even know he’s doing it, or even realizes that stuff is in there. So don’t take it personally. He isn’t trying to hide anything from you. I’m sure most of it is subconscious, which is surely why he doesn’t understand why this is bothering him so much. It just is.” He kissed Abel’s hair. “But there is a reason. And we will find out what it is. And when we do…” he smiled and rubbed his hand over Abel’s head. “…we will fix it.” Leaning against Gabe, Abel trembled, “What if he wants me to choose? Him…or you and Cole?” A sob lodged in his throat. “I love all of you. I need you all in my life.” “He isn’t going to do that,” Gabe assured gently, hugging him close. “He knows it would hurt you, and he would never intentionally hurt you. What he’s going through right now…you have to know it’s killing him to cause you anymore pain. But when it’s internal, sometimes a person needs help getting it out, dealing with it.” He hugged Abel tighter. “You’re not going to lose us, and you’re not going to lose him. When all the dust has cleared, we’re still going to be one big happy family.” He kissed Abel’s cheek. “And stronger than ever.”
