EXCERPT: Most of all, I admire Jan’s courage. Imagine for a moment what it might feel like to get up every morning knowing tens of thousands of citizens are depending on you to execute a quality, world-class political campaign to restore “leadership we can trust.” Imagine running against an opponent many have described as an intimidating bully, who has sold his political influence in Frederick County to raise campaign funds that may eventually exceed $1 million, while your own integrity means the majority of your contributions come from people who want a positive future for Frederick County for their families, knowing you will never sell your authority for personal gain. Imagine being the public target of a constant stream of inaccurate and misleading campaign propaganda that accuses you of raising taxes that don’t exist, raising fees that defend taxpayers by forcing development to pay its own way, giving yourself a raise not allowed by Maryland law, spending money you never spent, etc. Meanwhile, Young campaign staffers have disrupted one of our rallies, put up an impostor Facebook page and distributed false and misleading literature. To top it off, our large signs are regularly vandalized or stolen. Usually, when I go to bed at night, Jan’s light is still on in the office. She doesn’t get much sleep these days because she feels the full force of her responsibility to the residents of Frederick County. No one is working harder in this election than my wife. Her primary motivation is to once again earn the privilege of serving full time with all of her energy and focus the people of Frederick County. So when you see someone attack Jan’s integrity, think very carefully about the attacker’s motivations. And if you don’t know whose “facts” to believe, think most about character, not only of the person being attacked, but of the person doing the attacking. On Nov. 4, voters will chose between two dramatically different candidates for their historic, first-ever Frederick County executive. The charter has yet to be tested, and our first county executive must be someone who not only follows the rules, but who will also do the right thing even when there aren’t any rules. Remember, character matters most.
