EXCLUSIVE: Some Greenwich Hospital Nurses And Employees Have Met With Union Organizers To Counter Corvinos Preliminary Talk Of Layoffs. Greenwich Hospital employs 1,800 people, none of whom are represented by unions, at its main Perryridge Road campus and several satellite facilities in town. This may soon change for the hospital that is which is widely known for serving filet mignon or lobster to parents of newborn babies. Rumors are circulating that Greenwich Hospital CEO Frank Corvinos mismanagement is close to causing layoffs of 35 to 45 employees as well as, a series of cutbacks to what it characterized as non-core programs. Hospital nurses have started talking about unionizing, because Corvino continues to think its more important to serve surf and turf than to implement common sense cost controls that would help save vital healthcare jobs and benefit Greenwich patients. One head nurse said off the record,That is important that we dont diminish the patient experience and healthcare outcomes at Greenwich Hospital so the administration can serve up Culinary frills to hospital administrators and certain patients. Less than two years ago the high living and highly compensated Frank Corvinos mismanagement brought Greenwich Hospital cuts that included the elimination of the hospitals on-site pharmacy, the audiology/hearing service component of the physical medicine program and an outpatient dental clinic. Frank Corvino also announced layoffs for 36 healthcare employees. Less than two years ago every single employee at Greenwich Hospital was affected because of Corvinos restructuring of the compensation programs. Nurses and other Greenwich Hospital were required to pay much more for their medical benefits, as Corvino preserved the filet mignon and lobster. One nurse complained to a union organizer,If theyre getting ready to do a second round of cost cutting in less than two years, then why arent they looking at Corvinos $1.5 million salary aqnd his surf and turf lunches? Proof that Frank Corvino has poorly managed Greenwich hospital can clearly be seen when one understands that Greenwich Hospital is the only medical facility in the Yale New Haven network to resort to cuts and layoffs. When hospitals in Bridgeport and New Haven are doing better than Greenwich Hospital, then maybe it is time to get rid of Frank Corvino who initially trained as a pharmacist. Neither the New Haven Hospital nor Bridgeport Hospital has had any cuts, but Greenwich Hospital employees are going to get hit hard again. One Greenwich Hospital employee said,Theres a sweeping change coming through and its happening faster than people realize. Some nurses and employees said Greenwich Hospital is establishing different medical organizations, or alter egos, to displace the work of long term employees. Employees are saying Corvino of using the new medical groups to hire lower paid workers, replacing the 2011 employees who were laid-off. Union organizers have agreed with nurses that Greenwich Hospital transferred work to other entities. Moreover the union organizers say that said the various entities were a single healthcare enterprise and a single employer as defined by federal labor law. Some local elected officials are starting to say privately that they have deep concerns about the health care, employment and community service practices under Frank Corvinos leadership. Employees say that Greenwich Hospitals alter egos, are basically a legal maneuver to cut pay and benefits of long term employees. Employees say that these Greenwich Hospital alter egos, provide a windfall for select doctors and give patients a lower level of care.
